What is Search Engine Optimization?
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving a website to attract traffic from search engines like Google.
Optimizing your website can result in more than just driving traffic to your website. You can also engage with more potential clients, increase sales, and gain a technical advantage over your competition.
Search engines identify websites all across the internet. It’s how they populate results on the search results page. They also rank websites according to many factors, including but not limited to if it is mobile-friendly and the quantity and quality of the content found within.
Websites of quality appear in top positions in the search results, and attract the most traffic. In fact, 91.5% of all traffic goes to websites on the first page of search results![1]
Here are a few simple ways to optimize your site to receive potentially thousands of visitors from search engines.
1. Add More Content
Improving your online presence can be as easy as regularly adding fresh, text-rich content to your website. Google rewards websites that regularly create great content with an improved rank in the search engine results. Blogs are are great tool to add new content.
Include search terms related to your book in your blog content. If you are a family cookbook author, you may blog about “fun healthy kid-friendly recipes” to attract people searching for the same phrase on Google. The more content you create that is useful to searchers, the greater your online presence will become.
2. Strategically Place a Call-to-Action
Do you sell books on your website? Have a newsletter?
If so, you probably want to sell more and capture more emails for your list.
To meet your goals, it is pertinent to place a call-to-action in an obvious place on your website. Call-to-actions are buttons, links, or forms that tell users what action to take. It is possible to dramatically increase the amount of people completing actions you want them to take by strategically placing call-to-actions in your website.
Your blog is a great place to put a call to action. It is convenient for visitors to see how they can get involved with your business as they are reading your content. Plus, visitors who are engaged with your content are more likely to act.
3. Make it Mobile-Friendly
Have you ever clicked away from a web page that was too difficult to read or navigate on your smartphone?
People prefer web pages optimized for mobile that load quickly and are easy to read. By meeting these demands your website becomes available to a much larger audience.
You can create a website that works for mobile devices using free themes on WordPress, or you can hire a professional website designer to complete the task.
Not sure if your website is mobile-friendly? Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool to find out.
