Yosemite Writers Conference

Editors, agents to speak at annual Yosemite Writers Conference

Keynote speaker: T. Jefferson Parker

Eighteen magazine and book publishing professionals, including best-selling novelist T. Jefferson Parker, will speak to aspiring and published writers at the 2006 Yosemite Writers Conference, Aug. 25-27 at the Tenaya Lodge. Cost is $350, and the Tenaya Lodge is offering a special group rate.

On Sunday, August 27th at 9:00 a.m., Parker will read from his newest book, The Fallen, followed by a booksigning that will be open to the public. General admission for this event is $10. Students free.

The conference will feature one-on-one meetings with editors and agents, as well as workshops on how to write fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, thrillers, inspirationals and short stories. Two new features of the conference are a Magical Mystery Walk with thriller novelist Bonnie Hearn Hill and mystery novelist Sheree Petree; and a Literary Nature Walk with songwriter John Koontz and award-winning nonfiction writer Cindy Wathen—available to the first 20 to register and claim them. Free one-on-one consultations are also available to those who register early.

Winners of the Yosemite Writers Contest and the 2006 Sheila L. Stephens Scholarship will also be announced.

Writers have traveled from as far away as Virginia, Florida, Kansas, Ohio, Georgia, Mississippi, Bermuda, Thailand and Scotland to attend the conference.

Keynote speaker T. Jefferson Parker is a two-time winner of the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for Best Novel. A Southern California native, his first novel, Laguna Heat, written on evenings and weekends while he worked as a journalist, was published to rave reviews and was made into an HBO movie starring Harry Hamlin, Jason Robards and Rip Torn. The paperback made The New York Times bestseller list in 1986. Parker's following novels—all dealing with crime, life and death in sunny Southern California—were published to rave reviews and appeared on many bestseller lists. His writing has been called "potent and irresistible" (L.A. Times) and "resonant, literate and powerful" (Kirkus). The New York Times wrote that "T. Jefferson Parker is a powerhouse writer." Writing in the Washington Post, reviewer Carolyn See called The Triggerman's Dance "a masterpiece." Where Serpents Lie and The Blue Hour appeared for five weeks on the L.A. Times bestseller list. Red Light and Silent Joe made No. 1 on that list in May of 2000 and 2001, respectively and Silent Joe went on to win the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for Best Novel and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Best Mystery/Thriller. Cold Pursuit was named Novel of the Year by the Southern California Booksellers Association. California Girl won Parker his second Best Novel Edgar.

Local faculty members, including mystery novelist Sheree Petree, thriller novelist Bonnie Hearn Hill, editor/nonfiction author Cindy Wathen and Hazel Dixon-Cooper, the Cosmopolitan Bedside Astrologer, will also speak. Editors and agents include: Laura Dail, Laura Dail Literary Agency, Inc.; June Clark, The Peter Rubie Agency; Stacey Barney, Kensington Books; Kristen Godsey, Writer's Digest magazine; Andrea Brown, Andrea Brown Literary Agency; Maggie Griffin, Maggie Griffin Creative Enterprises; Doris Booth, authorlink.com and Authorlink Literary Associates; Anne Hawkins, John Hawkins & Associates; Erin Hosier, The Gernert Company; Regina Brooks, Serendipity; Irene Webb, Irene Webb Agency (film agent); Randy Heyman, University of California Press; Aaron Wehner, Ten Speed Press; and Kassia Krosier, booksquare.com.

September 14th = Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers

Join the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Mystery Writers of America for dinner with David B. Weiding at the Denver Press Club. David started out as an enlisted man, classification E-1, scrubbing decks and floated up to a mid-level Intel officer briefing the HPSCI. His range of stories included: *at sea in WestPac on a destroyer as the EW/Intel/Cryppie guy dodging TU-95s and Soviet Intel collectors and typhoons. *Battling within the Intel Community around the beltway (probably boring), including being in the IC as we prepped for Iraq and my own tales of chasing WMD. *chasing Al Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan (probably the most pertinent), being in country as an Officer In Charge of a special intelligence detachment and receiving my Bronze star. He promises to be very interesting and entertaining!

Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m., with the program starting at 8:00 p.m. NOTE: because of changes at the Denver Press Club, dinner will now be served by Food For Thought, a Denver caterer. The meal on the 14th will include: a spinach salad, a chicken Breast wrapped in bacon in cream sauce served with rice and mixed vegetables, rolls and butter, carrot cake for dessert, and water and/or iced tea as a beverage. Coffee, soft drinks and other assorted beverages are available to order from the Denver Press Club cash bar. Cost of the meal is $15 per person, and reservations for dinner are a must! Please RSVP to chris (at) christinegoff.com, and be prepared to pay for your meal with cash or by check at the meeting. No Shows will be expected to pay. Deadline for reservations and/or cancellations is Tuesday, September 12th.
