On Saturday, June 19, 1999, about 120 people watched as Spirit of the San Juans (photography by Kathleen Norris Cook, published by Western Reflections, Inc.) was named Best Designed Book by a Colorado Independent Publisher. P. David Smith started Western Reflections, Inc. in 1996 in the back of his bookstore in Ouray. Once he saw the hard time western Colorado authors had getting their books published, he opened his own publishing business. The awards banquet, held at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Denver, featured a presentation by book agent. Jodi Rein, who recently got local author Gordon Miller (Quit Your Job Often and Get Big Raises) a six-figure deal with a New York publisher, talked about publishing, agenting, and what it takes to get a major book deal.
